6 Steps to Effective Christian Writing

by

Sean Mize

There is an intense need and demand for Christian writing today. Christian literature has become more popular in just the last few years, as some topics such as the end-times, Christian development and psychology, and Christian teaching have entered into the mainstream market.

Individuals in both the mainstream market and the Christian market are purchasing Christian materials. As more Christian literature becomes available, Christians will increasingly be able to meet their reading needs via Christian avenues, rather than sorting through secular materials.

1. Christian writing must recognize that Christians want to read the same high-quality material that they feel they can purchase from a secular source, especially if the topic is not inherently Christian in nature. Christian writing must meet a high-level of competence to be considered worthwhile reading.

2. Christian writing must accurately and effectively describe the topic at hand. Any descriptions or word-pictures used must precisely portray the desired scenario, with no possibility of dual meanings.

3. Christian writing must offer the reader firm documentation for any facts that may be supposed. Many times Christian literature will reference undocumented scenarios, and, especially when those scenarios appear unfounded, Christians and non- Christians alike will question the accuracy without references or other documentation.

4. Christian writing must be clear and succinct. Christian writing, like its secular cousin, must offer the freshest material possible in the fewest number of words. Christian writing should efficiently impart meaning while conserving as much space as possible.

5. Christian writing should offer the reader a clear conclusion or solution to the problem examined. Christian writing that discusses a problem or concern should offer, at the very least, suggestions for improvement, or when possible, offer a clear method of solving the problem or concern.

6. Lastly, Christian writing must incorporate a high level of ethical and moral integrity. Both Christian and secular readers expect a high level of reliability when reading a Christian document.
