God's Word Reveals Who We Are and What We Are Not
by Angie Lewis
The word of God undeniably reveals to us who we are and
what we are not. The bible is not just a collection of words to use for
our reading pleasure, but the word of God is our daily bread and in
fact, life changing as we allow it to go to work in our lives. The word
of God judges the heart and soul of a person. Those who read and study
it are given the choice to judge themselves and make the necessary
changes to enhance their life for the better.
If we allow the power of God's word to intervene in our life, we
eventually come to know who we are and what we are not. When we allow
the word to develop in us, and it becomes an action, rather then just a
word, it penetrates our inner spirit and decides the moral and ethical
decisions we make in life. This is how the word decides who we are. An
example of this would be discovering you are a child of God and working
on being that child.
Through our daily actions, we find, because we are imperfect people that
both good and evil reside within us. The awesome power of the spiritual
self is that we can make correct choices. We can choose what is good and
right or we can choose what is not. God's word requires that we make
righteous decisions for our lives. Knowing this, then, we must not only
listen to the word but also let the word shape our lives and let it make
us who we are.
An example of allowing the word of God to enhance and shape our lives is
if we are tempted into a situation we know would not be right for us,
and we run away from that situation by not allowing it to become an
action in our life. Another example is having faith enough to give
issues over to prayer and letting the Holy Spirit (Jesus Christ) to help
us shape our decisions.
God already knows who we are and who we can become through Him, and now
it is our turn to become the person we were meant to be. When we "grow
in" the word of God we find out who we are by making the correct choices
in life, and deciding wisely. Ironically, it is only after we discover
who we really are, that we become to know what we are not.
For the word of God is living and active. Sharper then any double-edged
sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and
marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4:12
Did you know that we gain more faith by reading and studying the word of
God? Unfortunately not everyone who reads God's word will be alert to
what they read, and will not truly "hear" what the message is conveying.
Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is
heard through the word of Christ. But I ask: Did they not hear? Of
course they did. Romans 10:17-18
This scripture is talking about many of the religious leaders of Jesus'
day that heard the word but did not understand it. They had closed up
minds and hardened hearts. Today, there are some religious people and
leaders who are spiritually blind, while those who have never stepped
foot in a church are sometimes the most responsive to God's message.
If some people do not open their hearts to God's word, then they
certainly cannot apply God's wisdom into their daily lives, can they?
Since the word of God is not revealed to some people there will be those
who will never find out who they are and what they are not, even if they
go to church every Sunday and hear the message.
"Today, if you hear his voice do not harden your hearts." Hebrews 4:7
I encourage you to open your hearts to God's message and allow the word
of God to shape and enhance who you are, so you may have a peaceful and
abundant life in Christ, and then you may come to know who you are and
what you are not. Open up your mind spiritually to the word of God.
