Because of Dan Brown’s book The Da Vinci Code, questions about
Mary Magdalene being the wife of Jesus Christ have arisen. There
are several Mary’s in the New Testament. Part one discussed Mary
the Mother of Jesus while this article will other Mary’s that
appear in the New Testament with the exception of Mary Magdalene
which will be discussed in a separate article. Darrell Bock,
PH.D., in his book Breaking the Da Vinci Code, provided a list
of the New Testament Mary’s (15). That list follows:
In the New Testament Mary is a common name for women during that
time:
• Mary is the mother of Jesus (Luke 1:30-31)
• Mary of Bethany (John 11:1)
• Mary, the mother of James (not Jesus’ brother) Matthew 27:56)
• Mary, the wife of Clopas (John 19:25)
• Mary, the mother of John Mark (Acts 12:12)
• Another Mary mentioned in Romans 16:6
• Mary Magdalene (Luke 8:2 |
|
Notice that all except two; Mary of Bethany and Mary
Magdalene were distinguished by men, either as a mother or a wife.
“Often a connection to a male is the distinguishing feature” (Bock 15).
Mary of Bethany
In John 11:1 we learn that Bethany is the home of Mary, Martha, and
Lazarus. Mary of Bethany was distinguished by being from Bethany. In
John 11: 18 we learn that Bethany was less than two miles from
Jerusalem.” In Luke 10: 39 Mary was sitting at the feet of Jesus
listening to Him instead of helping her sister, Martha. In verse 42
Jesus tells Martha “Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be
taken away from her.”
In the story of Lazarus (John 11) Jesus told Martha in verse 25 “I am
the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even
though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do
you believe this?”
Martha answered in verse 27 “’Yes, Lord,’ she told him, ‘I believe that
you are the Christ (Messiah), the Son of God, who was to come into the
world.’” Martha gives us an affirmation that Jesus is the Son of God!
After this Martha, Mary and Jesus went to the grave where Jesus raised
Lazarus from the dead (John 11).
Mary, Mother of James
The Crucifixion
In Mark 15:37-39 “Jesus breathed his last. The curtain of the temple was
torn in two from top to bottom. And when the centurion, who stood there
in front of Jesus, heard his cry and saw how he died, he said ‘Surely
this man was the Son of God!’”
And in verse 40-41 we learn that Mary the mother of James was one of the
women at the crucifixion; “Some women were watching from a distance.
Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and
of Joses, and Salome. In Galilee these women had followed him and cared
for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem
where also there.”
The Resurrection
Mark 16:1 “When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of
James, and Salome bought spices so they might go to anoint Jesus’ body”
As they approached the grave they were wondering how the stone, which
closed the grave, would be rolled away so they could anoint his body.
Luke 24:2-10:
“They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they
entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were
wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like
lightning stood beside them. 5 In their fright the women bowed down with
their faces to the ground, but the men said to the, ‘Why do you look for
the living among the dead? 6 He is not here: he has risen! Remember how
he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 7 The Son of Man
must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the
third day be raised again.’ 8Then they remembered his words”
9 “When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the
Eleven and to all the others. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the
mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the
apostles.”
Mary, the mother of James, along with other women, were at the
crucifixion, and went to the grave to prepare his body for burial (there
was no time when Jesus died) only to discover that Jesus Christ was
indeed Risen! He is alive!
Mother of Mark
There is only one verse in the New Testament describing Mary, the mother
of Mark. In Acts 12:12 we read “he (Peter) went to the house of Mary to
the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and
were praying.”
Roman Mary
At the end of the book of Romans, when Paul was giving his salutations,
there is the last mention in the New Testament of a Mary. Romans 16:6,
“Greet Mary, who worked very hard for you.
~~~~~
Jesus died on the cross for your sins. Romans 5:8 says:
“While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 3:23 tells us
“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” This means
that everyone has sinned. And in Romans 6:23 we read “For the wages of
sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus or
Lord.” We do have a way out because Jesus suffered and died on that
cross, according to Romans 10:9-10 “That if you confess with your mouth,
‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the
dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and
are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.
If Jesus is speaking to you right now pray this simple prayer, “Jesus I
know I am a sinner. I know you died for me. I do confess my sin and
believe in my heart that God raised you from the dead. Thank you for
saving me as it says in your word.” Now you need to tell someone and go
find a Bible believing church.
In Part One we discussed, Mary the Mother of Jesus and
here we discussed several other “Mary’s.” In Part Three we will discuss
