Why Do People Do Stupid Things?
by Angela Mullins
While the fact that people do stupid things sells insurance, the
question is why do people do stupid things? I don’t mean putting on your
make-up while driving down the freeway or jumping off the roof tied only
to your robust friend.
Why do high school valedictorians end up in unhappy, mediocre jobs?
Why do children of alcoholics and drugs addicts become like that
themselves?
Why do police officers and lawyers break the law?
Why do people raised in godly homes and taught sound moral values go on
to live immoral lives?
The list could go on and on, but the last one pretty much sums it up.
Why do people who know better do contrary to what they know? That’s what
qualifies their actions as stupid. It’s like stepping out on the tracks
with a train moving full speed right at you. It’s just plain stupid.
There’s no excuse…but there is a reason.
I can speak from personal experience. I have done my share of stupid
things. I’ll spare us the agony of listing them. I even burned the
journals I kept during my stupidest period. All those actions had a
common element. ME. I don’t mean me in the sense that I committed all of
them, but me as relates to self or selfishness.
We all have this innate tendency to do what feels good, and usually what
feels good is getting what we want, and usually what we want centers
around our individual selves. Fattening food tastes really good, so I’ll
eat it and eat it and eat it, even though I know it will make me fat and
clog my arteries and cause cancer and…
People have done stupid things from the beginning. Why did Adam allow
Eve to eat the forbidden fruit and then eat some himself? Did he not
think the One who created him out of dirt was serious when He said don’t
eat it?
Then there’s the old saying “The Devil made me do it.” While Satan is
partly responsible, we have choices to make every day, and we must take
responsibility for those choices. That responsibility involves making
the right decisions as well as paying the price for the wrong decisions
we make.
So if we are prone to pleasing ourselves, how do we not do that? There
almost has to be some higher knowledge or insight into life in order for
us to realize that not choosing what we think will feel good is what is
best for us. It can’t be simple education and intellect. The examples
above prove that alone doesn’t work. There must be something else.
Something that causes us not to think about ourselves. Something that
changes the way we think; the way we look at life. Something powerful,
supernaturally so. Hmm...anything or anyone come to mind?
